Abstract
Richard C. Detweiler (1924-1991): pastor, bishop, educator and administrator. Born 26 September 1924 to Elmer M. and Lillian Clemmer Detweiler of Souderton, Pennsylvania, and given the name James Richard Clemmer Detweiler. Neither the first name James nor an inital J were used in adulthood. Richard was married to Mary Jane Rudy Detweiler (1926-2005). He died 23 September 1991 and was buried in the Souderton Mennonite Cemetery. Ordained by lot to serve Perkasie Mennonite Church in 1948, Richard was ordained (again by lot) as bishop for the eastern district of Franconia Mennonite Conference in 1954. He was a leader in the beginnings of Mennonite youth ministry in the 1940s and was appointed principal of Franconia Mennonite School (now Penn View Christian School) in 1949. In 1954 he became the first principal of Christopher Dock Mennonite High School and served in that position until 1966, while continuing to pastor the Perkasie congregation and pursuing graduate degrees at Princeton Theological Seminary. He achieved a Master of Divinity in 1966 and Master of Theology in 1967. From 1967 to 1980 he was pastor of Souderton Mennonite Church, following which he served as President of Eastern Mennonite College and Seminary in Harrisonburg, Virginia from 1981 to 1987. Though he never finished the doctoral program he began at Princeton Seminary, he received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Bridgewater College in 1987. After a short interim pastorate at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church, Richard and Mary Jane returned to Pennsylvania and the Franconia Conference, where he served as administrative overseer and led the conference's pastoral training program until his early death from cancer in 1991. Detweiler's papers include correspondence, family and personal papers and photos, and a great number of documents from his areas of ministry and educational work.
